Top Tech Cities in the World 2018

Which countries have the best infrastructure to support the brightest tech talent?

We’ve explored the data to determine this year’s ranking of the top tech cities to live and work in around the world.

We analyzed data including the average salaries for software engineers, the amount of funding available to early-stage businesses, and the cost of living in different cities around the world.

Key Findings

The research revealed that burgeoning startup mecca Beijing took the top spot from Berlin in 2017. The Chinese tech hub scored better than last year's winner in five categories including startup output, startup funding, and cost of living.

Shanghai and Stockholm join Beijing as new entrants to this year's list. Meanwhile, Moscow, Sao Paulo and Montreal fall out of the top 20. Overall, the US leads the way with seven top tech cities, though Europe and China continue to climb the rankings.

Despite the uncertainties of Brexit, London moves up to 9th place this year. The UK capital scored highly for startup output, time to start a business and startup experience. Astronomical rent and travel costs in part explain the city’s failure to crack the top three.
